One summer, a yellow Li-Lo raft washed up, and neither claimed it as solely their own. How fortunate for two only children such a friendship is! There was no quarrelling, no vying for authority, no competing. Miss Davally and Wilby’s mother formed a friendship. Together, he and Anthony found a cave no one knew was there. Miss Davally thought the provincial wine-merchant’s child might be lonely. Wilby’s family came to the sea every July. On wet days they played marbles in the kitchen passages. Jericho, an old Labrador, followed them around. Assuming that Anthony is alive, why would he be employed as a kitchen worker in Paris?… Miss Davally, who had lived with Wilby’s family, had introduced them. The man turns away… It couldn’t have been Anthony.

“Bonsoir.” Quite suddenly, the man is someone else. The man who came to look at him is on the street. Wilby eats and reads, indulging in the pleasure of being in Paris. He inherited then sold his family’s wine business in Ireland, just outside County Westmeath. Without communicating, the man who has come from the kitchen has gone… He visits Paris once in a while to make the rounds of salesrooms that sell rare postage stamps, spinning out his time, since he can afford to. Wilby assumes he is there to apologize for the lateness of his fish. With so many other options, I'm holding on with a thread, which is about to break.Short story about a chance encounter a middle-aged man has in Paris with a childhood friend whom he thought was dead… Aware of a presence, Wilby glances up from his book. I'm not even sure it's trying to be at this point. It's not a bad show, nor is it badly acted, it's just not clever. I feel like I've invested all this time, so I'll keep watching. The characters go through the motions bomber caught, motive discovered, case closed, and we move on.

It's a 'who done it' bomber in Flushing, NY. Episode 1, Folie à Deux, is pretty much the same. OK, OK.That's an exaggeration, but most of the show is spent on the case of the week, with the personal stuff as just a minor side note that's often not even mentioned only a few episodes later. The chemistry is still there, sort of, but who cares? They only spend like five minutes on the personal stuff, anyhow. It's a shame, because both Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller are great actors. The show seems tried stories just formulaic, and the acting seems dialed in. It's been flirting with cancellation for several seasons now, but until now it's managed to avoid the chopping block. ELEMENTARY (2012-present) is back for a fifth season, and it premiered low again.
